this is that president obama obviously got a lot of flack over susan rice and decided that was not a battle he was willing to fight. and so when she said, i don't want any more -- any more to do with this, he said okay. i will accept. i am not going to nominate you. chuck hagel, he decided he is going to go to the mat on the this one. i think he wins. >> absolutely. how does he not win? you know, it's him reaching across the aisle. he is doing exactly what he has been attacked every day, district attorney in and day out for the last four years, you know, by republicans for claiming that he is not doing, which, of course, you know which is reaching out, working with republicans, taking one of their own, you know, and not one much these country club old school republicans that i think really make up the vast majority of folks that colin powell talked about with his initial response with the tapping of the party. somebody who i think is respected but has some very conservative views, too. >> chuck hagel secretary of defense. at a time does speak -- and when we come back, i want to ask y

big news about chuck hagel. president obama is going to fight for this one unlike susan rice, he's going to fight to the finish line, nominating him yesterday to be secretary of defense. i was there in the white house yesterday when the president made that nomination. i'll tell you all about it. we'll also tell you about of course the big game last night. and efforts here underway in washington already to get ready for the debt ceiling battle. now we're told the treasury may not be able to pay its bills after february 15 which moves the clock up two weeks ahead of what we thought it was last week. lots to talk about. lots to get into. let's get right to it with team press. peter ogborn and dan henning. >> happy tuesday. >> good to see you bill. >> bill: thank you. not good to hear me. good to see me. i notice the difference there. not very subtle there. >> good to have you here. >> good to have you. >> bill: i wish i could do more. i'm drinking my tea. my hot tea my cold tea. >> you're doing everything right. someone e-mailed saying you should be drinking rum. >> i've heard of whis

will do a fine job. but he had options. >> bill: he also could have said to susan rice, you know, susan, i understand. we may not win this battle but you're the best person i think for that job and apparently that's what he did think and i'm going to make this fight. it is important to me to have you there. >> it also makes it more important now than ever that we embrace your idea of replacing hilda solis as secretary of labor with jennifer granholm. >> bill: there you go. started right here. i even talked to jennifer. i'm going to do her show tonight on current tv. >> you should say something. >> bill: yeah. maybe i should call her madam secretary. but i haven't even asked her whether she would accept the job that i've now given her. >> just details. >> bill: charles is in dallas, texas. hi charles. >> caller: how's it going, bill? >> bill: good. what's up? >> caller: i think this issue is a lot bigger than just obama and his appointments. if you look at the united states senate, for example, how many african-americans are there? >> bill: one. happens to be a republican. sadly. >> call

have president obama coming off of re-election. ultimately, their opposition to susan rice did pay some dividends because she withdrew herself but i think the president would intervene and be very, very out spoken for a former two-term senator who has earned two purple hearts for his service. >> i don't think there are a lot of people who agree with lindsey graham that this is in your face. den dennis kucinich. >> his commitment to israel with respect to iraq, that's one of the major issues that they have, i believe in 2006 sort of when he spoke out against the operation there, but that's the thing. if you even think about that point of view, the majority of americans agree with him and the war in iraq was very unpopular. are they going to get on t.v. and say the reason that we have such a big issue with him is because he criticized the operation in iraq? i think the majority of americans would say, so did we. >> i agree with you. i wondered what our caller from kristin, illinois has to say. what do you have to say about chuck hagel? >> i like him. i don't think the republicans said els
